Why Your Google Business Profile Is More Important Than Your Website

This isn't a clickbait headline. For many UK local businesses, the Google Business Profile — the listing that appears in the map box at the top of local search results — generates more inbound leads than the company website.

Here's why, and what to do about it.

The Local 3-Pack Captures 44%+ of Local Clicks

When someone searches "electrician guildford" or "dentist near me", the first thing they see isn't your website — it's the Local 3-Pack. This map box showing three local businesses captures between 44% and 60% of all clicks for local service searches, depending on the query.

That means more than half of your potential customers make their shortlisting decision from the map results — before they ever visit a website.

If you're in the Local 3-Pack, you capture that traffic. If you're not, you're competing for what's left after 44%+ has already gone to your competitors.

What Google Business Profile Ranking Factors Are

Google ranks businesses in the Local 3-Pack based on three primary signals:

1. Relevance

How well does your GBP match what someone is searching for? This is determined by your business category, services listed, description, and posts.

Action: Choose the most specific primary category available. Add every service you offer in the Services section. Write a description that naturally includes your key services and location.

2. Distance

How close is your business to the searcher? For businesses with physical premises, this is partially fixed — but your service area settings and NAP consistency across the web influence how Google interprets your geographic relevance.

Action: If you're service-area-based (no fixed premises customers visit), set your service areas correctly — don't pin a residential address.

3. Prominence

How well-known and trusted is your business? This combines review quantity and quality, backlinks to your website, citation consistency, and overall online authority.

Action: Build reviews systematically. Build citations consistently. Build links from local sources.

The Review Factor Is Decisive

Among all Local 3-Pack ranking factors, review velocity is one of the most powerful levers a local business can pull. Google's algorithm favours businesses with:

  • More total reviews
  • Higher average ratings
  • More recent reviews
  • Responses to reviews from the business owner

A business with 50 reviews from 3 years ago is typically outranked by a business with 20 reviews in the last 6 months. Recency signals active customer satisfaction.

Building review velocity: After every completed job or service, ask for a review. Make it easy — send a direct link to your GBP review page via text or email. Businesses that ask consistently get 3–5x more reviews than those that rely on customers volunteering them spontaneously.

Does This Mean You Don't Need a Website?

No. Your Google Business Profile and your website work together:

  • GBP captures map search traffic (the 44%+ in the 3-Pack)
  • Your website captures organic search traffic below the map
  • GBP links to your website — a weak website reduces conversion from GBP clicks
  • Website authority (from good SEO and backlinks) improves your GBP ranking
  • GBP doesn't replace your website for comprehensive service information, portfolio, pricing, or blog content

The hierarchy is: get your GBP right first (fastest impact), then build a strong website to convert the traffic and boost your map ranking further.
