How to Get Your Business on Google: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Whether you're a new business owner or you've been trading for years without a strong online presence, getting found on Google is one of the most valuable things you can do. Here's how to do it step by step.
Step 1: Create a Google Business Profile (Previously Google My Business)
This is the single most important free step you can take. A Google Business Profile allows your business to appear in:
- Google Maps results
- Local 3-pack (the map and business listings in local search results)
- Google Knowledge Panel (the information box on the right side of search results)
To create your profile:
- Go to business.google.com
- Sign in with a Google account
- Search for your business name
- If it doesn't exist, click 'Add your business to Google'
- Fill in all details: business name, category, address, phone, website, hours
- Verify your listing (usually by postcard, phone, or email)
Step 2: Build a Professional Website
A website is the foundation of all your Google visibility. Without one, your ability to rank for anything beyond your business name is extremely limited.
Key elements for Google to find and rank your site:
- Domain name — ideally including your location or service
- Title tags — include your primary keyword and location
- Content — clearly describe what you do and where you serve
- Contact page — include your full address and phone number
- SSL certificate — secure website (https://)
Step 3: Submit Your Website to Google
Once your website is live:
- Set up Google Search Console
- Add your website
- Submit your XML sitemap
- Request indexing for your key pages
Step 4: Build Citations
A citation is any online mention of your business name, address, and phone number. Consistent citations across the web signal to Google that your business is legitimate.
Essential UK directories:
- Yell.com
- Thomson Local
- Bing Places
- Apple Maps
Step 5: Gather Google Reviews
Reviews are a critical local ranking factor. Ask every satisfied customer to leave you a Google review with a direct link.
Step 6: Create Location-Relevant Content
Write content on your website that references your service area:
- Include your town/city and county in your page content
- Create a dedicated page for each area you serve
- Write blog content targeting local search terms
How Long Will It Take?
- Google Business Profile: Can appear in search within 1–2 weeks of verification
- Website rankings: Typically 1–3 months for initial rankings, 6+ months for competitive terms
