Do You Need a New Website or Just a Redesign? How to Decide

Many UK business owners reach a point where they know something needs to change with their website — but aren't sure whether to start fresh or update what they have. Here's the honest framework.

Signs You Need a Full Rebuild

1. The site is built on a platform you've outgrown If your website is on Wix, Squarespace, an old WordPress theme, or a builder you don't remember choosing — and it's performing poorly on Google or loading slowly — a fresh build on better foundations will significantly outperform a surface-level redesign. Redesigning on a poor foundation just makes bad infrastructure look nicer.

2. Google doesn't rank it If your website gets almost no organic traffic despite being several years old, the underlying SEO architecture is often the problem. Title tags, heading structure, schema, technical crawl issues — these can't be fixed with a visual refresh. A proper rebuild addresses the foundations.

3. It's not mobile-friendly Google switched to mobile-first indexing in 2019. Any website built before that without explicit mobile optimisation is likely costing you rankings. While responsive design can sometimes be retrofitted, on old or template-based sites a fresh build is almost always better.

4. The back-end technology is outdated PHP 7, jQuery-heavy WordPress sites from 2016, Flash elements — these aren't redesign problems, they're infrastructure problems that require a rebuild.

5. Your business has significantly changed If your services, target audience, or brand have evolved substantially, trying to retrofit that change into an existing website often produces an incoherent result. A fresh build lets you start from your current position.

Signs a Redesign Might Be Enough

1. The technical foundations are solid If your site loads fast, passes Core Web Vitals, has a clean URL structure, and ranks reasonably well — but just looks dated — a visual refresh may be the right call.

2. You have good content that just needs updating Existing pages that rank well have SEO value accumulated over time. Rebuilding from scratch means losing that history. If the content is strong, a redesign that preserves URLs and content structure while improving visual design is smarter.

3. The structure is still correct If the navigation, page hierarchy, and information architecture still reflect your business accurately, you may not need to change them — just update the look and feel.

4. Budget is the constraint A redesign is typically less expensive than a full rebuild. If budget is genuinely limited, a well-executed redesign can improve conversions and aesthetics while deferring the cost of a full infrastructure rebuild.

The Questions to Ask

  1. Does the site load in under 3 seconds on mobile? (Test at PageSpeed Insights)
  2. Does it rank on page 1 for any of your core local search terms?
  3. Is the platform something you're locked into?
  4. Has your business changed significantly since the site was built?
  5. Are you happy with the underlying structure and content?

If you answered no, yes, no, no, yes — a redesign may be sufficient. Any other combination typically points to a rebuild.
