What Is a Sitemap?

A sitemap (usually sitemap.xml) is a file that lists all the pages on your website you want search engines to crawl and index. Think of it as a roadmap you give to Google.

Why it matters:

• Helps Google discover new and updated pages faster
• Tells Google which pages are most important
• Particularly valuable for large sites or sites with complex navigation

Submitting to Google: Submit your sitemap through Google Search Console for the fastest indexing.

What Is robots.txt?

The robots.txt file is a text file that tells search engine crawlers which pages or sections of your site they should and shouldn't crawl.

Common uses:

• Block admin pages from being indexed
• Prevent duplicate content pages from appearing in search
• Point crawlers to your sitemap

Important: robots.txt prevents crawling but doesn't prevent indexing. For pages you truly don't want indexed, use a noindex meta tag instead.
