Technical SEO: The Hidden Foundation of Every High-Ranking Website

When most people think about SEO, they think about keywords and content. But underneath all of that is a layer of technical factors that either support or undermine everything else.

Get technical SEO wrong, and your content won't rank — no matter how good it is.

What Is Technical SEO?

Technical SEO covers the non-content aspects of your website that affect how search engines crawl, index, and rank your pages.

Core Technical SEO Elements

1. Site Speed

Page speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor. Slow sites rank lower and lose visitors.

Key metrics to improve:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — should be under 2.5 seconds
  • Time to First Byte (TTFB) — ideally under 0.8 seconds
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — should be under 0.1

Common causes of slow sites:

  • Unoptimised images
  • Too many plugins (especially on WordPress)
  • Poor hosting
  • Unminified CSS and JavaScript

2. SSL Certificate (HTTPS)

If your site shows 'Not Secure' in the browser bar, it's using HTTP not HTTPS. This is both a security risk and a ranking disadvantage. Every modern website needs an SSL certificate — most good hosts include one free.

3. XML Sitemap

An XML sitemap is a file that tells Google about all the pages on your website and how often they're updated. Submitting this to Google Search Console helps Google find and index your pages faster.

4. Robots.txt

This file tells search engine crawlers which pages to visit and which to ignore. Incorrect configuration can accidentally block Google from indexing your entire site.

5. Canonical Tags

If the same content can be accessed at multiple URLs, canonical tags tell Google which version to index, preventing duplicate content issues.

6. Core Web Vitals

Google's Core Web Vitals are a set of user experience metrics that directly affect rankings:

  • LCP — how quickly the main content loads
  • FID/INP — how quickly the page responds to input
  • CLS — how stable the layout is while loading

7. Crawlability and Indexability

Google needs to be able to find and read every important page on your site. Issues include:

  • Pages blocked by robots.txt incorrectly
  • Pages missing from your sitemap
  • Orphan pages (not linked from anywhere)
  • Broken internal links (404 errors)

8. Schema Markup

Schema (structured data) helps Google understand the context of your content. For local businesses, LocalBusiness schema can improve your appearance in search results with rich snippets.

9. Mobile Usability

As covered in our mobile design guide, Google uses mobile-first indexing. Technical mobile issues — like text too small to read or clickable elements too close together — can affect rankings.
